Just take a minute. Imagine you’re reaped. Effie Trinket pulls your name out of the fish bowl. You slowly walk up to the stage, noticing your rapid breath and sweaty palms. You reach the stage, shrinking away from Effie’s embrace. She calls for volunteers. It’s a lost cause. You know no one will come to your rescue. You’re right. You and the other tribute are escorted to the Justice Building. You say goodbye to your family. Your mom’s tears are flowing like a river. You’ve never seen your father cry before today. He’s standing strong, but really, he’s breaking inside. Your sister refuses to hug you. She doesn’t want to see you go, but she knows she has to. She gives you a token item. It’s a ring, gold and sparkly. You slide it on your finger for safe keeping. They’re ushered away and you’re taken to the train. It’s your first time on a train. It’s your first time eating such rich foods. It’s your first time away from home. Imagine having your life and every hope pulled away from you with just the draw of a name. Imagine leaving everything you know and saying one last goodbye. Imagine walking to your death.
